Changing the face of construction

Hannah LeatherbarrowSpeakmans are proud to have employed its’ first female joiner apprentice Hannah Leatherbarrow aged 17.  Hannah joined us in April and is currently in her first year at Accrington & Rossendale College as an apprentice.

How did Hannah become interested in becoming a joiner?  “I knew I wanted to be a joiner in the last two years of school.  I used to watch a friend of my dad’s, who is a joiner, make shelves and things and I wanted to do the same.”

Hannah has received a very warm welcome at Speakmans in Burnley having moved to us from a smaller business.  Hannah has commented that she believes that more females would be involved in this industry “but it’s all about having the confidence.”

Hannah finally added “Dad didn’t think I’d be able to cope with working in a male environment every day.  But I proved him wrong and now he is really proud of me!”

We wish Hannah good luck in her new employment and apprenticeship with us.
